Van-Chr-Zin is a blend of Vanadium, which helps regulate HDL (good cholesterol) in the brain, spinal cord and nervous system; Chromium, which helps increase the body's sensitivity to the hormone insulin for efficient utilization of surplus glucose; and Zinc, which is necessary for tissue repair and growth, as well as playing a key role in good vision.
Vanadium was proven to be an essential trace mineral in 1971. Vanadium stimulates glucose (blood sugar) oxidation and transport in fat cells and glycogen (animal starch) synthesis in liver and muscle, and inhibits liver gluconeogenisis (production of glucose from fat) and absorption of glucose from the gut. Vanadium enhances the stimulating effect of insulin on DNA synthesis. Despite low serum insulin, the blood glucose levels of diabetic rats fed vanadium was the same as normal controls.
Chromium is a trace mineral nutrient, needed only in minute amounts to help increase the body's sensitivity to the hormone insulin for efficient utilization of surplus GLUCOSE. Chromium represents one of the most recently identified nutrients, and its role in metabolism was discovered in 1969. Chromium is converted in yeast and in tissues to GLUCOSE TOLERANCE FACTOR, in which chromium is complexed with nutrients like amino acids and niacin. In this form chromium can assist insulin. As a supplement, chromium may be effective in alleviating elevated blood sugar (hyperglycemia) in some elderly patients, and in some diabetics, as well as in healthy, non-diabetic people.
Other roles range from protection against oxidation to digestion and blood sugar regulation. Thus zinc is classified as an antioxidant when it functions as a cofactor for superoxide dismutase, the enzyme that disarms a particularly reactive form of oxygen. In digestion, the pancreatic protease, carboxypeptidase, requires zinc for its protein degrading action. Furthermore, the hormone insulin is processed and packaged as a zinc complex. Zinc also aids the interaction of insulin with its target tissues to facilitate the uptake of blood sugar.
